Mac App Store crashing - high CPU load - when trying to update to 10.10.4

I am trying to update my iMac (2010 i3 core duo) to the latest Yosemite 10.10.4.

As soon as I load up mac App Store and click 'updates', it shows the 10.10.4 update as available but the 'checking for updates' wheel' spins constantly, never finishing loading - have left it for 30+ minutes. Clicking the update button for 10.10.4 does nothing. When I go to force quit Mac App Store, it shows 'App Store Web Content not responding' in red.

What also happens is that in processes, 'softwareupdate' is showing as using up to & over 100% CPU and even after force quitting the Mac App store, 'softwareupdate' is still running and taking up CPU making my Mac virtually unusable and I have to restart.

Getting beyond frustrated now! All I want is to be able to run the latest iTunes/Apple Music!

Please advise. Thanks.

I have exactly the same problem. iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), running OS X Yosemite 10.10.3.

The first time after a restart the main page in the AppStore app opens and shows apps (tab "Featured"). I can also view my purchased apps. Until here nothing hangs. When I open the tab "Updates", the spinning wheel starts and shows "Cheking for updates..." and never stops again. The computer becomes slow and the force close list shows "App Store Web Content (not responding)". The "UPDATE" buttons are not clickable. If if Force Quit the App Store app and starts it again, it does not work at all anymore. I see the dark gray app store logo on the lighter background but nothing happens. Nothing happens when clicking on any of the top tabs. I have to completely restart my iMac.

Apple, please fix this. This happens since I upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite.

I could fix this problem indirectly. This is maybe helpful for the developers to reproduce the behaviour:

I restarted the iMac, opened the App Store application and opened the "Purchases" page (so it doesn't start to search for updates). There where 2 entries ready for update (with button "update"), not directly related to OS X (I think it was for iMovie and Xcode). I updated one of it and was asked to a) login and b) accept the changed Terms and Conditions of the app store. Then I updated the other application too and closed the App Store application. After I opened it again and clicked on the "Updates" tab, it searched for updates but this time it stopped searching correctly after some seconds and I'm able to install the OS related updates (including OS X Update 10.10.4).

Maybe it is related to the license dialog for the changed terms and conditions which the user has to accept but the app store application fails to show it or because of the login dialog. Just an idea.

As several have suggested, reboot into safe mode and open App Store and update; should be OK, worked for me anyways. Had same symptoms, 100% CPU plus 30+ **GB** memory in use.

A hint as to what is going on is also found in /var/log/install.log where the following two lines are being written several times per second.

  1. Jun 30 22:03:17 XXXXX softwareupdated[...]: Package Authoring: File FWAVC.framework/Versions/A/FWAVC is not in either expected pre- or post-patch state for (package: com.apple.pkg.update.os.10.10.4.14E46.delta)

I had the same issue. What I did was reboot the computer. Then I opened terminal and entered the following command.

sudo softwareupdate -ia

This runs the command line version of software update and tells the system to install all available updates. The command line version worked for me when the App Store failed. After the updates are run then reboot the system and the App Store should be back to normal.

This has nothing to do with upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite. There is a problem right now with the Mac App Store servers, it appears. Everybody just chill out. Tomorrow is another day. The more you mess with it, the more frustrated you will get, the more likely you will hose things up even further trying to troubleshoot something that YOU cannot do anything about.

Watch a movie, read a book, take a walk, go out to dinner, smell the roses....whatever.....just.....chill.....out.....

Nobody seems to be frustrated or upset, except you.

The problem happens since Yosemite (not just now) but all the solutions from the people here work good and are helpful. 🙂
