Why is my fan suddenly coming on with start up?

I'm not sure what's going on, but after more than a year the fan on my MacMini is coming on soon after start up. I have plenty of available memory (on 5.02GB used out of 16GB) and I try to move larger files to flash-drives. I remember that iMovies tried to load a second version onto my computer last week, but I thought I'd deleted any such files. What would cause a MacMini to run hot immediately?

G4, Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Try resetting the SMC

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

Blow out/clean out any dust on the ventilation openings

Install a temperature and fan speed monitoring app and see what is happening to temps and fan speed.

Open up Activity Monitor and see what is using CPU.

Running this and posting the results here will tel us more about your configiration
