Q: Wi-Fi not working on iOS 8.4

Hi,

 

I had problems on iOS 8.3 where Wi-Fi worked at the beginning, but then stopped. Sometimes iPhone 4S attempted to connect, I saw wifi icon and then it disappeared. I tried Reset Network Settings, I managed to setup Wi-Fi connection again, but it worked for a few minutes and then again the same issue.

I was hoping that the issue will be fixed on 8.4, but now it's worse. After resetting network settings I cannot even join wifi network. After entering password, it says "Unable to Join the network. I have correct password, because I'm using it for other devices.

I tried to restore iphone through iTunes, but I cannot do that, because I'm getting error message "Find My iPhone" must be turned off. The problem is that I cannot turn Find My iPhone off in iCloud settings on the device, because Wi-Fi is not working. Now I cannot restore iPhone and I cannot setup Wi-Fi.

 

Another issue is the fact that device may not have 8.4 installed. Although it reports version 8.4, the device didn't show locked screen after update, like it did on iPad. It seems that device only shows version ioS 8.4, but hasn't really been updated, otherwise I would see locked screen after restart.

Is there a way to force iOS 8.4 update again on the device?

 

How can I fix wi-fi problem? Wi-Fi scanning seems to be a little slow. On that page the device often freezes for 20 seconds or so. The quality of iOS and Mac OS X has gone down dramatically.

 

I have $800 iPhone 4S, which has the antenna problem and I don't think I want another Apple device, if I can get Android device with better spec than iPhone 6 for $200. Over 3 years I made around 50 calls with this device and I'm not using much. I'm just using password manager app and need wifi for sync and backup.

 

You know what, forget this, because no one is going to fix/revert wifi code back to what it was on 8.0 or older.

    Hi,

     

    After reading your post I disabled my WIFI and never touched it again.

     

    However after waking in the morning I discovered that WIFI is greyed out in the control center and cannot be turned off. Battery is draining fast.

     

    This would be fixed sometimes by force restarting the phone.

     

    Previously, application always crashes like chrome and had random restarts of phone.

     

    I also cannot connect to WIFI, "incorrect password" is being displayed though correct password is inputted

     

    I have tried resetting the phone several times and also erase all settings.

     

    Experienced this after updating to ios 8.4.

     

    Iphone 6 plus user here. My girlfriend also updated her phone to ios 8.4 but does not experience what we are experiencing.

     

    VERY FRUSTATING for a first time user of an Iphone.

    I, too, am new to the Apple ecosystem.  I bought an iPad 3 many years ago and it was the most amazing device and technical ownership experience.  Then, I experienced the agony of the iOS 7 update, which came conveniently after my AppleCare had expired.  I am terrified to update to 8.4.  My ipad is my only access to the internet.  If wifi goes, I'm offline. I know I need the security fixes.  This whole thing stinks.  I feel like I discovered Apple just as things were starting to go downhill.  Another big concern is App updates.  As I am sure most of you know, most "updates" are usually for the benefit of the developer or otherwise ruin the app.  I'm afraid that if I have to do a factory restore, I will only be able to download the most recent versions of my apps.  This would be a disaster for me.  Again, this whole thing really stinks.  I was willing to pay a premium price for a safe device that "just works".  Unfortunately, I came in at the tail end of when this was still true. I think Apple's lack of forthrightness and transparency is what bothers me the most.  Enough rant, here are my questions:

     

    1.  Can anyone tell me if there is any way that (if i have to do a restore) I can get the older versions of the apps that are currently installed versus the updated apps?


    2.  Does anyone know why Why won't Apple just offer security patches or updates separately?

    p.s.  Even this forum has issues.  The cursor froze, couldn't be relocated, couldn't input.  I had to keep making the on screen keyboard disappear in order to get the cursor to respond.  So frustrating.   I want the old Apple back where the saying "It just works" was pure truth, now it seems like nothing but a sad reminder of how far they have fallen, not only in quality and reliability, but also innovation.  Instead of being a leader, a trendsetter, with the latest and greatest new technology, Apple now seems like a follower playing catchup.  Finally, by constantly changing connections and other design changes that seem designed more to increase profits than to move tech forward, on top of planned obsolescence, I am seriously considering going back.  This is from a customer who swore she would be a loyal Apple customer for life.  I still want to be.  PLEASE GET IT TOGETHER APPLE, PLEASE, we miss the old Apple so much

    The 4s tends to overheat the wifi chip. It might sound crazy, but try to cool it with the hairdryer all over the phone after turning it off. It has worked for a lot of people. If it doesn't work after that, reset it. If the problem is still there, get a replacement for free in the Apple Store if you have warranty, or if not, then you will have to pay.

    Your comment sounded a bit snarky and condescending.  So much for the Apple Discussion Boards being friendly and welcoming to newcomers.  I normally wouldn't respond to a sarcastic comment (don't feed the trolls    right?  So I'm responding to others because the information might be useful.  i contacted customer support by phone and email several times.  I got different answers EVERY time.  They had the audacity to say that there were no widespread problems.  Now before your little troll engine gets all revved up, please remember that we are talking about The Wifi-Gate Disaster that was iOS 7.  I spent hours performing useless tasks of increasing difficulty.  It is also important to note that , since my AppleCare had run out, I had to pay for the privilege of jumping through useless hoops for a company that wouldn't admit the had a major problem on their hands.  I drew the line at a factory reset of my device.  Mind you, my husband has the  same iPad 3 that I have.  For no particular reason, I decided to update mine first.   I'm so glad I did because he uses his for work.  I did not update his and that iPad continued to work fine while mine was a brick.  This did not sway the geniuses at Apple.  They said only option was to take it to nearest Apple Store (appx 2-4 hour drive depending on traffic) but there was no guarantee they could fix it or replace it.  Thank you for reminding me to mention the change in Apple's Customer Service.  It WAS outstanding, best in class, not anymore. They used to do whatever was necessary to keep the customer happy, something rare and special, now they are just like every other CYA, only profits matter corporations.   They finally offered me an option to ship in it.  I ended up going back to the Certified Apple Specialist from whom I bought the device.  He not only fixed it in one day, he was very eager to discuss with me how he cannot even recognize the Apple of today versus the Apple of many, many years ago when he opened his shop.

    "I don't understand my question" What does that even mean?   I am a happily married, successful attorney with a beach house in the Caribbean.  Another fun fact is that I have an IQ of 161 which makes me an actual genius, versus Apple's pretend geniuses, as well as a member of Mensa

    I too am having the same wifi connection issue after the software update!  The only thing that has worked so far is signing out of the Find My iPhone app.  I know it's the update because my iPad Air has not been updated and it works fine.  Now the funny thing is that my son has an iTouch with the latest update and it works fine...go figure!

    Wouldn't that make you conclude that the cause is NOT the update?

    I am very frustrated with iPhone/iOS and very disappointed with Apple that a problem with such a very critical component continues to linger. I have been using iPhone on the same home network since the day the first iPhone was released and have never had Wi-Fi issues until IOS 8.3 made an appearance. From then until now (iOS 8.4), every time my iPhone 6+ Auto-Locks, when I unlock it, it will never rejoin my network unless I toggle Airplane Mode on and off. If I simply go to Wi-Fi, the iPhone shows it is attempting to join my home network but never actually connects. Toggling Airplane Mode gets it to rejoin the network immediately, until it Auto-Locks again. It's very frustrating to have to do this many times a day.

     

    I use Apple Airport Extremes and Expresses around the house configured to extend my single home network. The network configuration has been stable and working since the iPhone 1 with iOS 1.x - I have added more Airports over time, but even there it's been probably 3 years since my last router addition. I have 2 Apple TV's and many Macs and PC's that connect to the network without issue.

     

    I have reset network settings, but based on the experiences of other iOS 8.4 users, I refuse to waste my time with any of these other fixes. The bottom line is that Apple has a MAJOR Wi-Fi issue with the iPhone that at least for me didn't exist until iOS 8.3. Because it was working with the first two releases of iOS 8, that rules out a hardware issue and directly points to something Apple did between iOS 8.2 and iOS 8.3 that made it break. I'm posting here in hopes somebody from Apple monitors these forums and will hopefully make it a priority to track down and fix. Given the number of pages this post goes on for, it is obviously a very common problem.
