My friend had to replace their iphone 4 battery. He lost the little screw that holds the silver part down. Will the phone still work and hold a good charge?

Impossible to know. Apple doesn't sell iPhone parts, including batteries. 90% of the replacement batteries you can buy out there are crap. Cheap knockoffs.

Important in what sense? You can't get help here for that phone. Try asking advice someplace like ifixit.com.
That device is no longer supportable either here or by Apple.
As in, do I need to buy another screw?
Let's say I didn't replace the battery, but had lost the screw with the original battery still connected. Would that affect the way the battery stayed charged or worked? Does the screw have any other purpose other than holding the metal piece in place?
