10.10.4 SSD Trim Command

New in this version of Yosemite, Terminal can be used to enable TRIM on non-Apple SSDs without the use of 3rd party enablers. I haven't personally used this but others have and it's working fine on non-Apple SSDs.

Open Terminal. To get the command's parameters, type man trimforce

Type sudo trimforce enable <-- this will enable TRIM on a non-Apple SSD and does not have to be re-enabled after Software Updates.

Enter an administrator password.

Restart your Mac.

Open /Applications/Utilities/System Information and check your SSD drive to make sure TRIM Support is set to YES.

Or within Terminal, type system_profiler SPSerialATADataType | grep 'TRIM'

Also, if you don't fill your drive completely, its normal garbage collection should be sufficient.

It does not work that way. Once all the file system's free space has been used at least once, the SSD thinks there is useful data in the sectors. So there may be lots of free space from deleted files, but the SSD may not know that. TRIM is the file system's way to tell the SSD that a deleted file's storage is available to garbage collection.

Now if the SSD is partitioned, and that extra partition is never written ever, then all of that space is effectively part of the over provisioning and spares giving the SSD more space for garbage collection.

Then again, depending on which SSD is being used, it may already have a sufficient over provisioning with enough spares such that garbage collection keeps up with the typical writes.

I installed a Samsung SSD 850 EVO on my 15 inch mid 2015 MBP and having been so impressed. However I'm concerned about the TRIM issue. Does anyone know where I could find out if its supported well enough, or should I just go buy an OWC drive with TRIM enabled?

I'm possibly chasing my own tail here, I'm having really odd finder issues that I've never seen before [ essentially I can navigate thru my directories via all my apps, but not with the finder, which does not refresh/ respond]...

Thanks :/

There are others that have used the Samsung 850 EVO with TRIM. Apple is NOT going to say anything about 3rd party storage devices. You would either have to take "ad hominem" reports of success, or get Samsung to tell you it is OK.

If you feel TRIM is affecting the Finder, then disable it and see if it still affects the Finder. Also try booting into Safe mode and see if the Finder is still affected (Safe mode is an experiment as it disables 3rd party software additions from starting) <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564>

Are you using Yosemite? I only ask because a lot of time people pigging backing on someone else's thread are not always using the same OS, _AND_ because if you are using Mavericks and Google Dirve, there is a known incompatibility between Mavericks, Google Drive and the Finder.
