How to better utilize Directory Services in Contact App on Client Machines

We are using Open Directory. If you open "contact" application on the client machine, "Directories" displays. However it doesn't display any responses automatically. If you type "Chad" into the search, it finds all "Chad" records in the directory - so everything is working correctly.

Is it possible to change a setting so that the directory displays all the users or at least users in the "workgroup" group without having to "search" for them? We'd love for our employees to easily see other employees listed in the directory. In talking with someone else, they thought there might be a wildcard character that could be entered that would show all users, but we haven't found one that works?

In the past our work-around solution has been to create a fake account - and then enter that account into everyone's contact app. It then serves as a shared account that everyone can see and can edit. However, this seems to have a few fall backs and doesn't seem as robust as it should. So, if anyone has a better solution, please share!

Thanks.
