new update...
since my last update i have had very bad, patchy reception. will this update solve this problem? or make reception even worse? i am with AT&T.

Try troubleshooting.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings then restart your iPhone to test.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
