midi keyboard slow response

Logic responds so sluggishly to my pressing a key on a MIDI keyboard M-Audio Keystation MINI or my big Roland digital piano. I'm trying to play live along to other tracks and it's like a couple tenths of a second later before a keystroke sounds on a piano track.

I've toyed a little with I/O buffer (not really knowing what I'm doing), reducing down from the 128 default (I believe) and it doesn't seem to affect it much. Any other suggestions? Thank you.
