I bought an external hard drive for extra storage, but what happens to all my applications when I reformat my internal drive

I want to re-format my internal hard drive to get rid of all the clutter that entered over the last eight years. But I want to keep my Windows applications such as Microsoft office. How can I keep these apps from being erased?
