ipad stuck on preparing to sync

I have Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit and the latest iTunes version 12.1.2.27 64 bit. When I connect my iPad to my computer via USB iTunes opens but it hangs on preparing to sink, (Syncing iPad step 2 of 5). Does anyone know what I need to do to fix this?
