Q: Photos difference between collections albums folders moments

iMac7,1 running Mac OS X version 10.10.3 and Photos version 1.0 (209.52.0).  iPad Air 2 64 gB MH2M2LL/A running iOS 8.4.

In Photos for Mac/iOs, I am confused by the meaning of collections, albums, folders,  & moments.  Where can I find a discussion of the difference between these elements in Photos and how I can appropriately use them.  I now have photos organized in collections and albums, but am not happy with what I've created.  I think I need to start over.

Among many other things:

* How are folders created?  How do they fit in with collections, albums, and moments.

• What is "Moments" all about?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

Years/collections/moments are the new "events" and are automatically set by Photos - it is a chronological & geographical grouping of photos

Albums and folders are defined by you (under the file menu) and are used for organization - they are not places and are not copies but just an organized way to view photos in your library

Albums show photos and folders hold albums or other folders - you totally control both - smart albums are the answer to a question that you set and automatically show all photos marching the criteria you set

Hav you read the Photo Help? That isa good place to start

Thanks for the info. I get the concept. Although I think Moments in Photos should be more like Events in iPhoto. Perhaps a step backwards to some, me included. Another move backwards unless I missed something, and sure could have, i.e. no way to enter a location....

Location entry will be this fall with El Captain - http://www.apple.com/osx/elcapitan-preview/?cid=wwa-us-kwg-mac-com

Backwards? Forwards? Personal opinion! Based on post here I's say a vast majority of people like the new system - but certainly a signifiant number do not - and for now you can continue to use iPhoto

Thanks for the info. And, let me preface this in that I'm more of a user guy who just wants to use the functionality. I'm not a tech guy, I don't enjoy troubleshooting.....

Being able to enter location is only important to me because I have a lot of things (11 old family albums scanned in, jpgs from a point and click before they all had location.....  Sounds like it's coming, but taking it away was a step backward.

You mentioned using iPhoto. I haven't been able to do that. I think when I upgraded to Yosemite Photos came on board and iPhoto became extinct. Or, something like that. Apple gave me the following. My experiences follow the URL

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204655

above support do says - "iPhoto remains on your system in the Applications folder, and you can continue to use it. If you open iPhoto after you upgrade to Photos, you’ll be asked if you want to open your library there or in Photos."

Well, when I click on iPhoto I get a message that says I need to update iPhoto. So, it takes you to the App store for the update. When you ask for the update it then says you aren't going to get it in North America!

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there is a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

NOTE: It's been reported by several users that if the Event albums are moved out of the iPhoto Library folder in the sidebar they may disappear.  It's not widespread but several users have reported that issue.  Therefore, if you want to assure that you keep those Event albums don't move them outside the iPhoto Events folder.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File âž™ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.  This will change with the release of Photos 2 with El Capitan this fall.  That will allow the sorting by date or title, ascending or descending.

Tell Apple what missing features you'd like restored or new features added in Photos via Apple-Photos Feedback.

    Thanks for the info.

One of my problems is I get comfortable when I finally learn how to use something like iPhoto. By the time I thought I knew what I was doing, could even post an album on the web while in there...... poof. I need to spend time to get conversant with Photos, so I'll use what you shared to learn more about it.

You can still us iPhoto if you'd prefer.  iPhoto was not deleted from your hard drive, only removed from the Dock.  If you have iPhoto 9.6.1 you can still use your iPhoto library.  If you don't have that version but some earlier version of 9.x try following Terence Devlin's instructions in this post to obtain iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash.

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

Some kind of update must have undone iPhoto. I'm not technical enough to deal with this..... There is an entry in the Applications Folder. See first image  below. When I do a Get Info on it I get the second image, saying it's version 9.5.1 I click on iPhoto and get the third image. I go to the app store and get the fourth image. That's as close to iPhoto as I can get at this time.

Did you follow the instruction to the letter, particularly the part in red?  Put your version of iPhoto in the Trash Bin, launch App Store and try again.

Thanks for the info. This solved my problem about not being able to have a running version of iPhoto on Yosemite 10.10.5.

To answer your question, I must admit that I didn't follow directions.... Mea culpa. My fault. Thanks for asking me again to ensure that I had a second shot at getting it right!

I was able to find iPhoto on the list, so was and did install it. It took a bit of doing only because of another technical challenge I have, but that should probably be another post. In which forum do you suggest I post a question about Apple ID problems?

    Thanks again.

with the new Yosemite update 10.10.5 it automatically disabled my iPhoto and replaced with Photos, I did not select this photo upgrade.. I cannot find anywhere to delete photos from this new app. I do not like it, so I read its just removed from the dock, I checked applications and its disabled by the update

    Screen Shot 2015-08-18 at 3.04.04 PM.png

    Above screen shot  shows that..

Now my big question is, why do we not have our option to delete our own images?? Im not using cloud, and these are photos from a camera memory stick not from an iPhone.. I want to delete and trash, which should be my option to do. Any help would be appreciated Thank you
