Mid 2012 Macbook Pro 13 Inch Graphic Problems?

Hello,

I have a Mid 2012 Macbook Pro 13 Inch notebook. So a couple of months ago, I started getting screen glitches and freezes while watching videos. This became more frequent later until one day I had my first kernel panic. This was around March or April 2015. After that kernel panic, my computer would not start up and instead would beep 3 times in each interval with about 4 or 5 seconds in between each interval. I looked up a bunch of other forums online and found out that it was most likely a problem with the RAM so I had a friend take it to the Apple Store for me since I was busy with school. The Genius at the Genius Bar told him that indeed it was a problem with the RAM and to my knowledge, all the Genius did was take the RAM out and put it back in. My friend told it it was "fixed" and for a little while it operated okay. I think there were still some screen freezes here and there but when I force shut my computer off and restarted it, it worked.

This lasted until mid May when the computer would not start again and once again had the 3 beep intervals.I scheduled another appointment at the Genius Bar and went for myself this time. Once again, I was told that it was a problem with the RAM, only this time, the Genius recommended that I upgrade my RAM since my old one was deteriorated. So I did. I ordered my RAM off crucial.com and put it in on my own. I upgraded from 4GB to 8GB.

I was convinced my problems were solved until not too long later, I once again got screen freezes and kernel panics. This led to the 3 beeps again. So at this point, I am convinced that it cannot be a problem with the RAM. However, I discovered that an "quick fix" to this problem was to simply remove the RAM and put it back in and then it would start up like normal again. Since then, I have been doing this method but I feared and still fear that this can only last so long before my MBP completely dies out. I have on several occasions taken a picture on my phone of the screen freeze and horizontal lines, however, I couldn't really find anyone else on Apple forums or on Google pictures that had the same type of problem as I do.

So today, July 1, 2015, I went to the Apple Store and Genius Bar once again. Earlier in the morning I tried to do a Apple Hardware Test at home and the screen freeze happened AGAIN. Before I came in today, I did a lot of web searching and found out that many people had GPU problems and some were able to get their logic boards replaced free of charge, but my model MBP doesn't fit the one Apple sent out a recall for. When I visited the Apple store today, I was told that my model does not have a GPU chip but rather the graphics are run through the CPU. I am not an expert at all with computers but pretty much I was told that it was a hardware problem and not a software problem with my MBP. Specifically my logic board was bad. I actually met with the same Genius who diagnosed my RAM as the problem last time. So my options were to have it fixed or not. In store was actually more expensive than if they were to send it out. But ultimately, the cheapest I could get was a flat rate of $280 plus tax. I live in New Jersey so with tax it would have came out to be right under $300. I have already paid a hefty price in the past since I spilled liquid on it accidentally. During that fix, the logic board was replaced too but the Genius told me that there is only a 3 month warranty for that. I bought my Macbook in August 2013 so I'm already past the one year warranty and do not have Applecare. I did not want to pay $300 for a computer that I already paid a lot for to fix in the past and which also costed $1050 to begin with.

So, I was wondering does anybody else out there have the same problem? Is it possible to start a petition for a recall for a faulty logic board/graphics problem for this particular model? Because at this point I either need to pay that price for another logic board that may or may not give me the same problem later on, keep using the method of taking out the RAM and putting it back in until my MBP dies out, or just get a whole new brand new computer (not Apple).

Here are some of the symptoms I get:

-Frequent screen freezes where colored horizontal lines pop up in vertical columns (usually blue)

-Occasional kernel panics where my computer will restart on its own and display a message saying my computer was restarted because of a problem

-Both of the above symptoms can cause the next time I start up to have 3 beeps and no start up where I will use my quick fix method

-Can happen when laptop is possibly overheating/overused

-Can happen anytime, does not need to be while watching video but videos may make it more prone to occur

Any help or knowledge will be appreciated. Thank you.

-Harold

I've had the same exact problems. My first "beeps" were back in December 2014. I took it to my school's information and services technology center and they reseated the RAM which seemed to fix the issue. Then, I experienced the same problem approximately two months ago. I replaced the RAM, as you did - no luck, it happened again. The hard drive was replaced both at Apple and by my school. Still happened again. I was told the last thing that must be causing this is the logic board (this whole time neither IST nor the apple store could reproduce the issue). I had the logic board replaced this past weekend and within 6 hours the screen glitched and my computer shut down and began beeping. I have an appointment on Thursday with genius bar but at this point if it's not the logic board and they can't identify the issue I have no idea what's going to happen, and I'm incredibly frustrated to say the least.

I had this problem not once, not twice, but four times with my Mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro. Whenever I picked mine up by the left edge, horizontal lines would appear in the screen and the machine would restart. Occasionally, it would beep and refuse to start, and sometimes I'd turn it on and it would play the start-up sound over and over again.

After many memory reseats and two logic board replacements at my local apple authorized service provider, with the issue popping up days later, Apple opted to replace my 11 month old MacBook with the same one. Nine months later the same issue rears it's ugly head, and I immediately insisted this time that the machine be replaced. I then opted to pay the difference to upgrade to the 2015 Retina MacBook Pro. I've only had it for a few months, we'll see how it goes...

My girlfriend bought the exact same configuration as me, and she has managed to get through her entire 3 years of AppleCare without making a warranty claim.

I have the same problem. This started a few weeks ago unfortunately after my AppleCare warranty ended. I am in Greece an the cost to repair it is very high. I have a mid 2012 MBP with i7 and 8Gb RAM and a Samsung 840 evo SSD. I exchanged the memory chips with no luck. Sent it to a very good apple service (not official). They opened the case cleaned the Mboard and put it back but problem happened today again 4 times in a row. I don't know what to do. Buying a new one is not an option , repair is not easy as the problem is not easy identified and may not happen when in service. I Was very satisfied with this machine until now.

I have the same problem with you guys.

I thought its a problem with the RAMs so I bought new RAMs and upgraded. It had seemed to be working fine for couple days, then the problem appears again now. Every time the problem happens and the macbook freezes with the beep sounds 3 times then I do the SMC reset and the PRAM reset. However, it can be only temporal repair method.

How can we solve the problem?

i have the exact same problem after I upgraded my ram to Kingston 16, which shud be compatible..after resetting smc and pram, it lasted for a week or so then these blocks of lines are coming back again. sometimes with deafening loud noises. I really hope some expert or Apple can look into this! seems like only this model, mid 2012 13 inch mbp has this problem!! exact same problem....😠

my issue looks exactly the same as above. but has a more vibrant colour to it

This looks like a RAM issue, but I can assure you that it isn't: It's an issue with the connection between the RAM slot and the processor. I no longer have my mid-2012 MacBook Pro, but I do remember that only one of the sockets on the motherboard routinely failed, the other one didn't.

My suggestion to anyone that still has one of these awful machines and it's out of warranty: only use one stick of RAM (that still allows you as much as 8 GB total), and leave the bad slot empty.

i was mislead by a supposed technician that promised a gpu repair, who finally fried my MB and now I have a non working MAC. A different technician told me that this issue is a north bridge problem on the MB which however is not repairable. On my case reseating memory modules or keeping one was not solving the issue.

Good luck to all of you I hope you find a solution.

I strongly believe this is a video problem...for the model 15 and 17 inches Apple has a free repair program. The 13 inch model is not included because the technician told me it has a different board card and it's not a worldwide problem. I read many reviews and many people have this video problem with mid2012 13inch, I would like to encourage all of you to leave a feedback in the Apple site or go to an Apple Store, maybe soon or later we will get a free repair too!

I have the exact same issues as you and I too bought a new RAM from crucial and upgraded from 4GB to 8GB. I feel like I'm reading my story with my MBP. I'm not sure if signing a petition would help recall all the MBP with manufacturing issues but I'm definitely all for it. I'm a student and I use my computer for everything and the fact that my computer was crazy expensive and it turned out to be faulty is just not fair. Apple needs to take care of this issue otherwise they just lost customer. Next time I buy a computer I will take my money elsewhere.
