Q: Incorrect password with iPhone 3GS using time capsule as router

I have an iPhone 3Gs and never experienced problems connecting to my home wifi. Two days ago, I tried to log in to my home wifi, but I was expected to put in a password. I did so, but the message said it was incorrect. I have a Mac Book Pro OS 10.6.8 and the wifi works fine on the computer. My router is a time capsule, version 5.6.1.  I also have an iPad and do not have problems. I tried to reset the network on the iPhone, but still no luck. I read many posts, but I cannot find the solution. There is nothing wrong with the hardware of my phone because I can use wifi elsewhere without any difficulty. I would appreciate some help, if anyone has already had a similar problem. Thank you.

iPhone 3GS, Mac OS X (10.6.8), null

    Strange stuff happens.

I would have said the phone was faulty but if it works on other wireless networks.. change the wireless setup.

My router is a time capsule, version 5.6.1.

That is the version of the utility not the firmware in the TC.

Open the TC in the airport utility.

Click on manual for setup. That will take you to the summary page which will show the version and what is available for update.

    Screen Shot 2015-07-02 at 8.20.09 AM.png

    Click on the wireless tab.

    Screen Shot 2015-07-02 at 8.23.06 AM.png

I want you to do several things here.

    1. Change to a really short name. No spaces and pure alphanumeric.

    2. Change to Manual Radio Channel Selection.. click the edit and pick channel 11 for 2.4ghz

    3. Remove the security for a test.. so just run none.

Now on the phone remove all the old wireless names. Set it to then discover wireless again.. and connect to the new simple TC name.

If that works put the security back on.. if not reset the TC to factory and redo the setup again so it matches the above.

Okay, I followed all the steps. Yes, it works without security. I kept the same name that I used when I changed it and also the Manual  Radio Channel  Selection, but as soon as put in the password, it tells me it is incorrect. :-(

Did you empty all the old wireless names out of the phone?? You must do that.

And Yes.. I do want you to change the name of the wireless to short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. it simply works better.. and use security on that.. do not mess with the old name.. it gets the phone confused.

There was only one wireless name and it was short and pure alphanumeric, so I had it right the first time as well. As soon as I input the password, it says it is incorrect.

Change the name.. so you have a new configuration in the phone.. this is not going to work using the old name.

Sorry I am not sure how to empty out old wireless names in the iphone other than a full reset.. which you don't want to do yet.. but if the above doesn't work then it might be necessary.. something has got the wrong setting and you are not clearing it..

It should however be possible to at least forget the current wireless. Tap the i next to the current wifi.

    IMG_0469.jpg.

    Then forget it.

Delete as many as you can.. but apparently iOS is not enabled to actually clear out all the names like Mac OS.

Sorry, but I do not have an i. I have arrow keys and I do not see forget this network. I see this on my iPad not on my iPhone. The only other network name I had no longer appears among the list of networks. I will have to google this to this how I can clear former network names. Thank you again for your help.

On iOS 'Settings app > General > Reset (at the bottom) > Reset network settings'. That will erase all known wifi networks & any custom settings you applied to them.

Make a backup in iTunes/ iCloud if you are worried about losing them before you reset it. It may remove custom APN settings too (if you have manually setup the carrier details).

I have tried to reset the network several times, even when I had my former network name, but still no luck. I simply changed the network name on my iPad without any problems. Why can't I do the same with the iPhone?

I was responding to your question on resetting all the networks. I'm not sure if your devices all support the same network type. The 3GS supports 802.11.b/g for example, it may be that the time capsule is setup for 802.11.n only, it won't be the issue unless you edited the settings (or the capsule is faulty).

iOS doesn't allow you to remove networks when they are not in visible range hence the need to nuke all settings, it's unclear to me why it would stop showing on one device only unless the device does not support what is being broadcast to the other devices. let the model of the iPad or MacBook Pro if you want to confirm what specs they support (Apple menu > about this Mac or in Settings app > General > About on iOS).

Hello again. I just did a test. If I remove security from my network name, I can easily log in. As soon as I put in a password, it tells me it is incorrect. My time capsule supports 802.11. b/g. I have been using this time capsule with this phone for four years. I have never had any problems.

In the TC, set the wireless security to WPA+WPA2 and use a password that is entirely alphanumeric.. mixed case and numbers.. does that work??

Otherwise Factory reset the TC and start over with the most minimal settings or reset the phone networking as Drew explained and see if you can get it work.. if neither helps welcome to the world of wireless voodoo. Offering chicken livers makes as much sense as this stuff.
