Q: Places work erratically

Everything was fine until now. I wasn't using iPhoto for some time so when I imported new photos today and wanted to assign places I got a long wait that resulted in nothing. At first, iPhoto couldn't find a place though Google Maps located it easily, and now when I was checking whether it's able to display my other places (that it used to perfectly) I see this (or to be more specific, see nothing, just blank space).

What is this and how do I resolve this?

This was a problem in the past with Google cookies. Open Safari (I'm using Safari 8.0.7 on Mavericks now so these instructions might not be exactly the same) and go to the Privacy tab. There should be a button for "Details" about website data. Search the cookies for "Google" and delete all of them.

You may need to quit Safari and iPhoto. But before Apple switched to using Apple maps for the places this resolved the issue.

The issue can't be a simple cache or cookie issue as it appeared at the same moment (end of june) for every people using iPhoto 9.2.x to 9.4.x

But I gave it a try and suppressed all the Google cookies from Safari.... to no avail!

The "blank screen map" issue remains within iPhoto.

Thank you for the idea, nevertheless
