Q: iOS 8.4 slow wake on iPad Air 2

After upgrading to iOS 8.4, I noticed that there is a 1-2 second delay before the screen turns on after waking it up.  This generally happens if my iPad has been locked for a few minutes and I'm certain that this wasn't present in iOS 8.3.  Has anyone else noticed this behavior?  I'm going to submit a bug report to Apple, but wanted to reach out to the community first...

Yes, same with me. I'm using an iPad Air 2, wi-fi. I have a 1-2 second lag trying to wake after sleeping for a few minutes. iPhone 6 Plus working normally. Plus, a few apps crashing.

No unusual behavior before iOS 8.4.

And this update was in beta for a couple of months?!

    I filed a bug report.

Hi, I'm using iPad air 2 64gb wifi + cellular, I have 2 - 3 second lag trying to awake after sleeping for a few minutes. My iPhone 6 64gb have a little dalay (less than 1 second) compared with iOS 8.3 (not comparable with the delay of Ipad).

On Ipad this is really annoying!!

Me too! iPad Air 2 128GB now has a significant delay when unlocking using the home button. What an embarrassment! How could Apple allow such a ridiculous problem to be present on a public OS release?

ALSO: It also seems Garage Band (and countless other apps) have a delay when trying to use the iPad Air 2 built-in mic, rendering the app unusable for recording purposes.

Continually making their OS worse, while adding features I do not want, while ignoring outstanding problems is the Apple of today. I really hope they wake up start caring about what matters.

Confirmed on mine too since 8.4

    iPad Air 2 64gb Cellular.

Smart Cover however on open does not exhibit this delay.

Ruling out the Smart Cover as being a trigger...is the delay seen when the Home button is used, the Sleep/Wake button is used or both? Approx how long is the "resting" period before the issue manifests itself?

I'd like to test further later on since I noticed only a 1 second or less delay and only after being alerted to the issue.

Ok I have been having to same problem difficulty with surfing web since latest 2 updates on my ipad air.  I thought it was just me until I started reading these forums.  I have backed up my device and then did total factory reset of device which like everytime you shut it off it and turn it back on then interestingly I noticed I that I was getting a notice on the top of my browser to update my google account (it's linked now with safari).  I did go through all the steps of confirmation of my google account and so far that notice is gone and I've been surfing and using apps that surf for a solid 30 minutes and so far so good... we'll see if it holds.

Smart Cover works fine, there is no delay. So the magnetic sleep/wake functions fine.

It's when the device sleeps with no cover attached. Say, it's standing on your desk all day.

Happens with power button and home button. I made a video, it's being converted on Vimeo now but will post it shortly.

Thanks for the info...I'll test it later on under those conditions. Any idea of the idle-time before it happens?

About 10 minutes is all it takes.

Maybe I just don't understand but how is not having a smart over causing the delay? I use an otter box hard case on my air 2, haven't tried taking the case off yet, but I just don't see how that's causing this. Before 8.4 pressing the home button or the power button instantaneously powered the screen on, with a micro second delay afterward to read my finger print (if using the home button of course) then on to the home screen. Now it's as if the fingerprint read is happening before the screen turns on, and the delay is happening in the screen power up.

It's a different wake detection path (magnet cover vs home button).  I have a smart cover and wake-up time on opening the cover is near instantaneous but if I leave the cover open and the hit the home button after it has been sleeping for some time, I see the lag. (Air 2 128GB WiFi/LTE).

I've tested my Air 2 and have been able to replicate the delay. The device does not even need to sleep for very long for the delay to occur at the next wake instance...maybe as little as one minute. I did a side by side comparison of my Air 2 (16GB, Wi-Fi) and my mini 2 (16GB, Wi-Fi), both under iOS 8.4 and the Air 2 does indeed take ~1 second longer (both device's Home buttons pressed at the same time) for the screen to come up. I pretty much use the Smart Cover to wake the device so that's likely why I didn't notice it initially.

That being said, the issue doesn't really affect me that much since I do use the Smart Cover to wake the device and that one second doesn't really seem that long to me. Still, it is kind of strange and I've filed a report regarding this issue.

Exactly, It does not affect anything, I have the extra second to spare during the day, even if it's 15 or 20 times a day . It's just odd and it only occurred after we all updated. Weird stuff....

BTW, I have an OtterBox Defender case on my Air2 and this version does not have the magnets which really bummed me out when I finally realized it.  But I am so observant, I didn't even realize it until I had the device in the case for about two weeks!
