I have difficulty with Podcasts on my iPod Nano

I have an older iPod Nano that I bought in about 2008 or 2009. I used to be able to update podcasts by checking or unchecking them in iTunes. However, with the later versions of iTunes, I cannot easily remove podcasts once I've listened to them. Does somebody have a solution for this problem? Thank you.
