No volume available in apps

hi. When I use apps I get no sound. It tells me no volume is available. I have checked and the iPad is not muted. I have also tried resetting it by holding down the home button and the sleep button. It still doesn't work. In the bit at the bottom of the screen which shows the mute bell there is no volume control at the bottom of the left had side - or anywhere else. Can you help?
