Canʻt backup videos (from new photos app) to external hard drive?

Just updated to the new iOS and with it the new photos app and had two big issues; first of them being that I could not import photos/videos from my iPhone (had to force quit and try about a dozen times before I could get it to import all photos/videos) but the biggest issue is that when I try to back up my photo/video library to my external hard drive the videos will "paste" to my hard drive as mp4 files, but rather a screen shot of the frame and as a jpeg.

I have a ton of videos that I have and would like to save for many years to come - this was never an issue with iPhoto but am I missing something or am I screwed? Will it work if I connected to a Windows OS computer?
