what can i use instead of iPhoto and how can i get my photos

I have just upgraded to Maverick 10.9.5 on my Macbook Pro. My version of iPhoto will not work now and the upgrade is no longer available in the App Store. What app can I use for my photos and how can I retrieve the photos from my iPhoto library?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

How is it that you "just upgraded" to Mavericks as OS X 10.9 Mavericks has not been available for download from the Mac App Store since OS X 10.10 Yosemite was first introduced?
