When attempting to upgrade iTunes on a Windows 7 PC from a working iTunes installation, the upgrade installer errors out with a 2324 error. Further attempts to run the installer manually or with another download fail. Uninstalling iTunes and then attempting reinstall fails with the same error. Ran Malwarebytes and AVG just to make sure, and installation still fails. Any ideas?

Disable the AVG software then try updating iTunes.
Anti virus software is often the culprit when an iTunes installation fails on a PC.
Thanks Carolyn, but no joy. For some reason, the installer validates the install multiple times. The executable is iTunes6464setup.exe -- made me wonder why the "64" was repeated, but maybe that's just random.
The itunes6464setup.exe file is a 64-bit installer for a 64-bit application and mainly 64-bit components. The "for older video cards" version mentioned below is a 64-bit installer for a 32-bit application and mainly 32-bit components, similar to all 64-bit versions of iTunes prior to 12.1. It downloads as itunes64setup.exe and may install for you if the new version won't.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach.
