How I can elevate more than one number or letter in equation?

Hallo, I am not able to elevate more than one number or letter: when I go to Insert equation, and I want 3^(a+b) it visualizes elevate only (, but a+b) is written with normal type and not elevated. How I can?

An other question: ever in equation, when I write equation I put parenthesis braces, but then it doesn't visualize when I make update, why? The mean of equation changes without parenthesis braces..

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)
