delete watched tv episodes

how to prevent episodes already viewed on one device from downloading onto another because they are linked via icloud (watched episodes on iphone, now ipad has 48 episodes in download queue that iive seen and cant figure out how to remove or stop from downloading. iphone is 5s ipad is first gen so unable to update to latest iOS, thank you. also occurs with newer ipad and ipad mini.
