I have an iphone5 and for some reason the 'Settings' icon does not appear on the screen. How can I retrieve it?

I have an iPhone5 and for some reason the 'Settings' icon does not appear on the screen, therefor I am unable to alter any of the settings. How can I retrieve the icon?

iPhone 5, iOS 8

Try to reset your device. This won't delete your data stored on the phone.

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button
Press and hold on the Home button
Keep holding both buttons until the display turns off and back on with Apple logo on it.
