Main Photo Library.migratedphotolibrary

Hi All,

Only just upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks 10.10.4 and of course, among the other little snags here and there, iPhotos has been replaced by Photos.

All has proceeded reasonably well so far with Photos, but I have two similar sized libraries in my User/Pictures folder:

Main Photo Library.migratedphotolibrary

Main Photo Library.photoslibrary

User uploaded file

The latter is clearly the active library looking at the dates.

Now, I have read much about hard linking between the migrated and Photos library, but according to Finder, these two libraries are doubling the size of space in the User/Picture folder and I would kind of like some of that back. Am I going to have to keep a 50Gb file hanging around on the off-chance that I will need to migrate my photos from the previous format?

Many thanks

iMac (27-inch Mid 2010), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

iPhoto has not been replaced by anything - it is still in your Applications folder and works just fine (you need version 9.6.1 - if you were not up to date see Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store )

And you do not have double the size - because of the hard links each library reports having the hard linked photos in it but they are only on disk once - Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support so deleting it will save little space

And no you do not have to keep anything, you can do what ever you want but if you are wrog the consequences may be problematic for you - it is recommended that you do keep the iPhoto library as if you delete it and ever need it is can be difficult - at a minimum make an archive copy of it on an external drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)
