i just tried upgrading my iphone to the latest software and its not picking it up?

I just tried upgrading my iphone 5 to the latest ios 8.4 software however its not picking it up on itunes. Also on the phone it is stuck on the screen with the itunes logo and a charger wire cable. can someone please help me?
