I have Snow Leopard software and was thinking of upgrading to Yosemite. Any downsides?

I have Snow Leopard and realize I can't open items because it is out of date. I am thinking of upgrading to Yosemite. Anyone know of any downsides? And if I will loose any content already on my computer?
