Unable to manually copy music onto my iPhone

After updating to iTunes 12.2.0.145 and my iPhone 6 with iOS 8.4, I have been unable to manually copy music from the iTunes library on my Mac (OS X 10.10.4) onto my phone. Browsing the music on my device using iTunes, the songs I tried to copy are in light grey font with a circle to left of the check box. I've checked that "Manually manage music and videos" is still selected, there's plenty of space on my device and these songs are in the supported format (as they have been in my last iPhone 5s). This Mac is also the only computer I sync this iPhone to.

I have had this problem, reasonably frequently, ever since I bought my first mac 4 years ago, I always manage to rectify it after loads and loads of messing around, ticking boxes, unticking boxes, calling Apple support, re-booting, etc, but now it's not working again and I've had enough, I'm going back to Windows because it's SO EASY on windows EVERY TIME, Mac's are supposed to be so intuitive, but that's clearly just good marketing. I was actually about to buy an ipad this weekend, but this is the last straw I am now going to find another tablet ... no more wasting my time Apple 😟

I'm assuming you've tried all the normal trouble-shooting steps such as restarting iTunes/computer/iPhone, restoring iPhone, trying different cables, etc. For what it's worth, I have a 5S updated to 8.4 and 12.2 iTunes and I am still able to manually add music to my iPhone while it's connected to iTunes so it may be as simple as restoring and trying again.

Hi,

Hoping you (or someone) can maybe help me. I have signed up for Apple Music but not signed up for iTunes Match however, I cannot copy music to my phone manually as it says I am signed up for iTunes Match. Any ideas how I can get around this? I like Apple Music but have about 1.5TB of music on my PC so clearly I can't dump all of that on my phone therefore, I rely on being able to manually copy music to my phone. If I can't, it'll be enough for me to cancel Apple Music after the trial. I hope there's a workaround of some sort...

HI there!

We have different problems as I didn't sign up for Apple Music and didn't encounter the iTunes Match prompt that you have.

As for Apple Music and offline files, i understand that Apple Music subscribers can choose only songs they want on each device to be downloaded onto it. So it won't try to download your entire collection onto your device(s).

With regard to the problem I have to manually copy music onto my iPhone 6, unfortunately the problem remains after restoring the phone and all the other suggestions kindly offered by Jamvan. BUT, I stumbled across a workaround.

1. With iPhone plugged in to the Mac and iTunes running, select a bunch of albums you'd like to copy onto the device. Looking at the music on device in iTunes, all these songs will be grey with a circle on the leftmost column (meaning yet to be copied I assume). Though the top status bar says preparing to update, it never proceeds to copy.

2. Next I eject the phone, unplug it from the Mac and quit iTunes.

3. Launch iTunes and plug in phone.

4. Go to music on device and you should still see the new songs to be copied are greyed out. Delete one of them greyed ones and it should trigger an update. The rest of the songs you dragged to the phone earlier will start copying (finally!).

5. however if you have more to copy that what albums you have selected in step 1, be sure to drag and drop them to the device while step 4 is still in the midst of copying! That way you don't have to start from step 1.

Hope that helps someone. 🙂

I'm having the same problem. Can't copy music to my phone from my mac with everything fully up to date. I have tried all of the standard troubleshooting things, hard reset of the phone, etc. I'm hesitant to restore the phone because I have over 100GB of music on there and anytime I have to put the entire library back on the phone there are inevitably substantial copying errors. Most of the solutions on here seem to deal with turning off the iCloud Music Library option, which I don't have since I'm not signed up for iTunes Match or Apple Music.
