i started downloading iOS update for iPhone 6 and my phone locked up. Now the only screen available is one figure saying connect to iTunes. Suggestions?

What exactly are you seeing on the phone's screen ? Have you connected the phone to your computer's iTunes, does that recognise the phone and let you reset it ?
i have connected to a computer and it will not recognize the phone. All I see is the symbol for connecting to iTunes, like the plug in
Your computer's iTunes is up-to-date ? There is some troubleshooting on these pages :
