Problems syncing Mac Contacts with Gmail

I am running OS Mavericks 10.9.5 on my MacBook Pro and I cant get contacts I add on the laptop to sync with my Gmail contacts. But it works the other way - in other words, if I add a contact to my Contacts list on my Iphone, it does appear in the Contacts list on my Macbook. From reading previous posts, I can see others have the same problem.


Past posts say I need to enable Google in the 'On My Mac' account box. But see below screen grab for On My Mac, it comes up blank - nothing to enable


Is this a problem with OS 10.9.5? Any solutions out there?
