Why convert to ProRes?

I am going to show my ignorance here. I see where a lot of folks convert to ProRes before importing. Why? The exported master is ProRes anyway, so why convert?

I simply take my .mov files from my JVC camera and ingest. I don't get it.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers.

YYou only need to convert if the media is in a format that doesn't have direct import to FCP.

I have JVC camera that records EXDCAM EX, it is native format for FCPC, but it is not optimized. I always convert to PRO RES 422 on import, the reason is that PR is much better to edit in FCPX, of course the files are bigger but space is no issue for me. I have to use third party converter because FCPX do not allow optimize files that are native. So if you have space I recommend to optimize and edit with PRO RES
