restore from time machine backup stalls

Hello -

I'm trying to upgrade my MacBook pro to a new, larger Hard Drive from a Time Machine backup and although it starts off well, after about 5 or 6 hours it stalls out at precisely 10.7% complete - every time. I've seen some of the other posts and have tried everything, including booting from another source and running the Disk Utility on both the source and destination drives (both PASS). So for now I've just gone back to the old hard drive, which is almost out of space.

I've run out of ideas. Has anyone seen this issue and gotten around it?

thanks

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)
