Streaming eats into my device's available storage capacity

Has anyone else noticed that streaming music is eating into their device's available capacity? I have an iPhone 6+, and I have noticed that in Settings -> General -> About the "Available" keeps shrinking the more I stream. I am NOT downloading the songs for offline. At first I was adding artists and albums I would like to listen to to my music, Apple support did tell me that adding artists and songs to My Music does not use any storage. But as an example, the first night as a test I decided to add every Nine Inch Nails album (because i know there are a lot of them on Apple Music) to my play next cue and then went to sleep. When I woke up I found that my available capacity dropped, not a little but, but by a full 4-5GB! Yesterday, I did some more tests and I have found that on average, every 5-6 albums I stream (depending on how many songs are on an album) it eats up 1GB of available storage.

Talking with Apple Support they told me it is just a cache of the songs and that cache would delete itself when i quit the app or restart my device. I have done so several times and I continue to lose available storage. I have asked Apple support a couple of times to clarify how to clear the cache but they have no answer, so I'm hoping someone here has found a trick. I can see my history of songs played, and I really feel if i can delete that maybe the cache will delete as well, but I have only found a way to clear the upcoming songs playing, not what has already played.

At this rate assuming I only stream 5-6 albums a day I'm set to run out of storage on my device in a week. I'm really considering trying to flood that to see what happens when I do run completely out of space on my device. But If anyone has a solution that'd be great.

The music app does cache data for songs that are streamed. However it deletes the cache as needed (usually). So when your space starts getting low it should auto delete the cache. Just to make sure you haven't downloaded any songs for offline playback, goto to settings, general, usage, storage and you'll be able to see how much space the music app is taking up. You can delete any songs that were downloaded to your device here. Hope this helps.

Hi Codycgb, thanks for the reply.

I looked in settings / general / usage / storage and oddly enough the songs I streamed from apple music are not listed, so there isn't anything for me to delete to clear up the storage. so in my case as I mentioned I streamed the Nine Inch Nails discography but Nine Inch Nails isn't listed in the storage because I didn't add them to my music, i just simply played the songs. I think you're onto something however, If i add an artist or a song to my music it shows up there, but what's the point of making playlists and adding artists to my music so i can quickly access them if i have to constantly delete them and re-add them?

I foud the problem!

The Apple Music automatically saves the song you listened to before!

Try it. Find your music history on your iPhone (when you play a song left button, Its where it shows the next songs just scroll up) and play one song.

It will play it even without wifi or any internet connection.

Now I try to find a way to delete them but I only find the "Restore your Phone" option so far.

Hi sscerberus, and everyone else...

I too have had this issue... this is what i have been able to figure out...

First off, when i joined apple music I didn't have any songs downloaded to my iPhone, but did have several that were in the cloud. On the "My Music" section all my songs were listed from the cloud... so... i started listening... shortly after that, i noticed these songs appeared to be download to my device...

General > About > Songs = 2... then 3... then 4 and so on...

But none of these songs i ever made avail offline... so...

To remove them from my phone, i had to make these songs "Avail Offline" then immediately "Remove Downloads". This action clears it from your phone...

But, i go ahead and listen to the same, or other songs, and they reappear... very frustrating...

Further, for fun, i made one song avail offline, and just listened to another so essentially i had two songs download to my iPhone...

I took my phone to my car and began to play "My Music"... Both songs were played...i assume one was being streamed via my cell data and the other was being played from the download... to prove this, i turned off my cell connection and only the song i downloaded was avail. i turn my cell network back on and they both become avail again...

all in all, very frustrating... this is my first venture into a streaming music service so maybe i don't quite understand yet...

I guess its like photos/videos...

General > About > Photos - i have over 3000, but no space is being used unless i look at a picture, it downloads the full version for viewing, then i have to assume once i'm done with it... the cache clears itself...

ps. I have been told that if you hold done the power button to display the SLIDE OFF screen, instead of sliding it off, hold down the home button for 3-5 seconds... this is supposed to clear the RAM/Cache of the phone... however this doesn't work in this case for Apple Music.

for what its worth...

Hi mauijiminar,

I think we all understand that, and have noticed the option to only view the music to which we have made avail offline...

I think ultimately what i am wondering is that regardless of what may be download to my iphone and what is not... everything i place in MY MUSIC is avail anytime/anywhere... (maybe thats the point), but... i feel that if i want to listen to only music i have made avail offline, while away from my home wifi network, i cant... my phone is always on the cell network, and it plays everything i have ever listened too... listening to music now will eat up my data at a very high rate... maybe i can't see it, but i an not aware of a setting to only listen to music avail offline while away from a wifi area...

example...

I want to go out for a morning jog... i make 10 songs avail offline... i start listening and before too long, i'm streaming music from MY MUSIC that i have not made avail offline... i don't want to do that...

if anyone can suggest how i might go about doing that, it would be a great help....

I Don't have any music stored for offline. I only stream the content as I mentioned when opening the post Which is still eating up storage on my device. I have also deleted any music I've purchased which was automatically downloaded from the cloud which left me with 16gb available on my device. Since the release of apple music. And not downloading any new apps or taking any photos or video to use up available storage I'm currently at 10Gb available. Again I'm not down loading any music. I simply find a song I want to hear and stream it directly.

TEST THIS GUYS!

-Play a song you never played before. Play the full song BUT dont make it available offline JUST stream it!

-Play another new song but this time MAKE it available offline.

-Now turn your Wifi and Cellular Network OFF!

-Go and play the song you DOWNLOADED.

User uploaded file

- Press the button I highlighted and scroll up to see your Music History!

- And now play the new song you have listened the first time to but did NOT DOWNLOAD!

You will see that you can play the song even if you dont have any internet connection!

So it is clear that the song HAVE TO be on your phone!!

We all know that the Apple Music is a bit slow. But look how fast it loads the new song you listened to at the first time... LIKE ITS ON YOUR PHONE...

And I think it is there in the background!

I stumbled upon this thread after just posting the following that seems directly related (although perhaps not identical):

Apple Music Songs Added to Playlists are Storing Locally to My iPhone?

I can understand caching some stuff if it's efficiently cleaning it up and not putting the overall capacity of your device (iPhone in my case) at risk to the point iOS is throwing capacity warnings. If every song I choose to add to a Playlist or Library (without explicitly "Making Available Offline") is actually being stored on my device, it seems diametrically opposed to the main value to most users in a streaming music service.

I want to believe there is really a bug here somewhere, but want to believe this isn't some tremendous design oversight.

I had a long live chat with the Apple Support and they started to investigate the problem

This is the email from them:

I have some great news about the issue from our investigation. What follows is a precise description of what we found:

What we’re seeing here is behaviour that we expect - as content is streamed, a cache is built on the device. This is also the reason that a cached song can be played without an active network connection. There is a temporary copy. iOS is smart enough, though, to recognize when more room is needed (to stream other content, for example, or to stream a movie, or take a picture.) At that point, it’ll clear enough room to take that action.

So, you were absolutely right about space being taken up through use of Apple Music, but the great news is, it will be removed to make room for other content you use with your iPhone. I do want you to still keep an eye out for a message that indicates you are low on storage, since that should not be happening due to cached Apple Music content. If you do receive that message about being low on storage I would like for you to take a screenshot (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT200289) and send the picture to me via email. Other than that, seems like everything is working just as it should, so thank you for hanging in there while we determined that.

Aug 4, 2015 9:04 AM in response to csob_ad

Hello csob_ad... I too had a nearly similar conversation with Apple when i first noticed this when Apple Music launched... They too told me that the cache would auto delete. I asked if there was specific information they could provide me with in terms of how this works, such as at what point will it decide it's time to delete things in the cache. Does it delete cache after x number of days or once it reaches a set storage limit? They were unable to give me an answer, and my testing hasn't proven any specific results yet either. I have noticed some songs have finally begun disappearing from my History section... however, the available storage hasn't improved, so perhaps I simply stream too much music resulting in me constantly caching more than it is deleting. I've been meaning to do a test of writing down the day and time I stream a song and then seeing how long it takes for it to be removed from my history.

Hi sscerberus.

I dont know how it works either.

I think the iOS is smart to know, when you need the free space and it deletes the cache from Apple Music or after some time it starts to delete the cache that belongs to the latest songs you listened to.

The only solution I found is Ease All Content and Settings after a backup.

Streaming eats into my device's available storage capacity
