It’ll only back up items manually put on it. Apple’s iCloud isn’t intended as a Mac OS X backup service.

Can you put photos on the cloud? If so, how?

If you are using Yosemite 10.10.3 or later then yes, the new Photos app integrated into Yosemite 10.10.3 will store to iCloud. Apple explains this in iCloud Photo Library FAQ - Apple Support.
Perhaps you can elaborate where your photos are stored, do you currently use iPhoto or any other app for managing your photo library?
Also, we need to know what version of OS X is installed on your iMac.

Got it, then no you cannot use iCloud for backing up your photo library. You will need to begin using the new Photos app to get this feature. By using the Photos app you will then also have access to your complete photo library on iCloud.
Thank you. Sorry for the dumb questions but how can I be sure if I am using the new photos app. We did recently download a new photo app which changed how our photos are organized.
When you launch any app in the upper left menu click "About ....." and it will tell you the App's name and version. The Photos app is also in the Dock, simply drag your mouse slowly over the Dock icons and the name will pop up.
