Crash at 20% during set up

I just updated my Macbook Pro to the new version of Yosemite with the iPhoto to Photos conversion. During the initial start up of the photos app, the Preparing Library process freezes at 20% and crashes the app. I attempted to repair the library by holding down command + option but it gives me an error saying that there is no library to repair.

How do I fix this?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2009), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Photo was not deleted from your hard drive, only removed from the Dock. If you have iPhoto 9.6.1 you can still use your iPhoto library. If you don't have that version but some earlier version of 9.x try following Terence Devlin's instructions in this post to obtain iPhoto 9.6.1 from the App Store:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash.

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

If you're able to get iPhoto working again and still want to migrate to Photos try repairing the iPhoto library as follows:

1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.

2 - apply Option #1, Repair Permissions followed by Option #4, Rebuild Database.

3 - went the repairs are complete drag the iPhoto library onto the Photos icon in the dock to start the conversion again.
