Scanner not working on new printer, old mac.

How can I update my imac OS X 10.6.8 so that my new brother laser printer/copy/scan DCP L2540DW, scan function will work. It prints, copies ok. I already have a usb cable 2.0 attached even though the printer is wireless, is this mac wireless?

According to the Brother website you would need the minimum OS X v10.9 Mavericks. Mavericks is no longer available for download from the App Store so see if your Mac can run v10.10 Yosemite. It's free.

How to install OS X Yosemite on your Mac - Apple Support

Before you install Yosemite, make sure you have one of these Macs:

  • iMac (Mid-2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

Your Mac also needs:

  • OS X Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8, already installed
  • 2 GB or more of memory
  • 8 GB or more of available disk space
