imac peripherals need to be switched out constantly

System specs:

OS 10.8.5

Processor: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory: 8GB 1600MHz DDR3

I believe it was purchased in 2013.

Periodically, when restarting the computer, the keyboard and mouse stop working. If I replace it with a different keyboard/mouse, it works fine. If I shut down and turn the computer back on again, the keyboard and mouse stop working. If I replace them with the ORIGINAL keyboard and mouse again, it works again.

I am now experiencing the same issue with an external display connected via thunderbolt/hdmi adapter. The display will stop working, and cycle through the digital/analog inputs looking for a signal. Every time it gets to the digital/hdmi option, the iMac screen flashes as though an external display was just hooked up and it is getting ready to have 2 displays. It comes back with only the iMac display working. I can switch out the displays, and it works. When it stops working again, I can replace the new display with the ORIGINAL display, and it will work again.

In both cases, if I unplug the non-working peripherals and plug them back in (without swapping them for a different unit) it will not fix the issue. They must be swapped to fix the issue temporarily.

Anyone know why this happens? How to make it stop?

I've tried looking at display settings to see if there is a something blocking it there, can't find any issues. I've trying clearing the NVRAM, no fix.

Reset the PRAM 2-3 times back to back, sometimes the first take does not work. Also reset the SMC, again try 2-3 times back to back. Instructions for both resets are in:

iMac SMC and PRAM reset

If 2-3 resets of both do not work, then please post an EtreCheck report of your system and we can look for obvious issues. You can download EtreCheck by clicking http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Thanks for this. I am still hesitant to say that this solved my issue for good.

I did the SMC reset, and when I turned the computer back on, I tried the PRAM reset. I heard the startup bing twice, but I was still holding the cmd+opt+P+R to give it another round or two, but the keyboard stopped responding in the middle of that and it just started up, I had to switch keyboards. However, when the mac came back on, the display was working again. I can't tell what did or didn't fix it yet.

This issue persists...

Here is the requested report:

Problem description:

When I restart my computer, 90% of the time the keyboard doesn’t work and needs to be replaced. Simply unplugging and replugging it in won’t work. But the next time it happens, I can go back to the original keyboard and it works again. I have cycled between the same 2 keyboards for weeks now. Additionally, my second display (connected thunderbolt>HDMI adapter) has a similar issue.
