No idea how this happened, my phone rang and when I answered I heard nothing, then heard this bloke say hello. When I looked at my phone it was a FaceTime call and he was playing with himself. I have never received such a call before and wonder how the **** he got my number. FaceTime displayed his gmail address, I also have a gmail address but don't understand how my phone number could be linked to gmail or how he got my number. I'm pretty freaked out!

FaceTime can be called using your email address. To eliminate this:
Settings > FaceTime > You can be reached by FaceTime at > deselect the email addresses.

Report it to the police just as you would an obscene phone call. You have his email address, give it to the police and let them do their job.
Hard to know, but probably the same way spammers get it - by hacking a site you sent it to or buying it from the many sites that sell personal info.
You can block his email address:
Settings > FaceTime > Blocked > Add New >
He may not have been targeting you specifically but just randomly trying to use Face Time to email addresses or phone numbers until he got someone that the call went through. Prank phone calls in the 80's were done that way before caller ID - just randomly dial numbers until someone answered.
Well the idea of that is comforting. A random call rather than targeted.
