MacBook Pro Running hot and slow with lots of fan

My late 2011 Macbook Prog 15" has started running very warm with fast fan speed. It started today after trying to download iMovie update from the App Store. The update would not download properly, but I couldn't find a way to stop it. It finally finished. I have restarted computer, then completely shut down and let cool. It is currently propped up so that bottom is open to air. EtreCheck is attached. Can anyone help?

Problem description:

My MacBook Pro (15” late 2011) is running hot and the fan runs constantly. I have it propped up so that the bottom is up in the air. Safari is the only program running. It acts like I am doing a lot of Lightroom adjustments. This happened after I opened AppStore this morning to download updates. I seemed to have trouble with the iMovie update, wouldn’t download properly and I couldn’t stop it. Re-booted computer twice and finally deleted iMovie entirely. No change. Unhooked all external disks.

I can seee why your Mac is running slow ... the iMovie app has nothing to do with the problems.

More than likely the Avast anti virus software and CleanMyMac are both culprits. Better to not install third party so called "cleaning" products. Your Mac does maintenance in the background for you.

Uninstall Avast > How to completely uninstall avast! Free Antivirus from a PC or Mac | How to | Softonic

Avast has caused many Mac users problems as noted from the results of an ASC search > Avast problems | Apple Support Communities

Anti virus software on a Mac can do more harm than good > The Safe Mac » Mac Malware Guide : Do I need anti-virus software?

You also need to uninstall CleanMyMac > The Safe Mac » How to uninstall software

Here are the uninstall instructions for CleanMyMac2:

http://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac2/knowledgebase/how-to-uninstall-cleanmymac- 2

If you put you MBP to sleep and it was hot when you opened it, it probably was not asleep.

Reset the SMC and NVRAM:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063

Run an Apple Hardware test:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257

Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.

Ciao.

Hi Ogelthorpe,

Unfortunately, resetting SMC and NVRAM did not solve my problem. I also was not able to get the AHT to start, though I tried several times. The computer just booted up as usual.

I went to the Activity Monitor and discovered that 98% of CPU time is being used by a process call "com.hp.devicemodel.transportproxy". I was not able to force it to quit. It just keeps running, even, apparently when the computer is "asleep".

If I uninstall all the HP Printer software, do you think that would make it quit? I posted my question on the HP boards, but don't see much activity there.

Thanks,

Tom
