Disabling iCloud for pictures

I was just wondering about the photos on both my iPhone and my Macbook. Because my pictures exceed 5 GB, I am disabling the pictures as I'm fine with having them just on my phone and laptop. However, I want to make sure that I still have them after the 30 days of iCloud storage is up. Basically, how do I know if the photos are downloaded on my computer/phone or if they are still being stored in iCloud.
