If I rent a movie from iTunes, can I watch it offline?

I am going on a road trip tomorrow and would like to rent a movie to watch on the way. I'm wondering if I will be able to download it and watch it on the road, or if I would have to buy it to do that. I know that I would only get it for a limited time if I rented it.
