apps dont work using cellular data?

i have an iPhone 5 and when I turn on my cellular data my apps like twitter and whatsapp don't work using the data and I have been on the settings and I cant see a way to allow my apps to work using the data which is very frustrating as I can only really use my phone when connected to wifi
