Why can't I log into apple support communities? I can view as a guest, but not when logged in. I have to use my wife's iCloud account to log in successfully. I know my user name and password are correct, but I get a dead page.

Once you hit that page can you click the Apple Support Communities link?

This seems to be a rare glitch that affects certain folk's - I am relatively certain that it gets somehow "attached" to the Apple ID account.
I have not seen report back from others who have been afflicted, but I suggested to them - and I do now to you - that you try Contacting Apple for help with Apple ID account security .::. PLEASE tell us whether this resolved the issue - and HOW - so that we can let others know with certainty next time we see this (there WILL be a next time, I assure you)
