Q: Won't accept Apple Pay

I received my Apple Watch (Sport model, updated to version 1.0.1) on 4/24 and immediately set up Apple Pay, which I hadn't been able to use previously on my iPhone 5s (iOS 8.3). On Monday I had to sign out of my iCloud account briefly on my phone — at the advice of AppleCare techs -- to solve a problem with iBooks, and then I signed right back in. Ever since then, however, I've had a serious problem with Apple Pay.

First, Apple Pay had big red announcements next to each of my added cards to say that they were unavailable. When this didn't resolve itself after a few hours, I called tech support again and was advised to unpair the watch from my 5s and then repair it and restore from backup. I also restarted both the phone and the watch.

At that point, there were no longer any cards at all in Apple Pay. Attempts to re-add them result in a notice that the attempt failed and to wait until later or to call my bank. I've done both of those things. The bank told me that there's nothing preventing adding my cards. Waiting 48 hours as I did prior a subsequent attempt Wednesday gave me the same message as before. I am not even getting as far as getting the code to input.

Now I'm stymied. AppleCare doesn't have an answer, and I don't have Apple Pay, which makes me very disappointed, as I found it very convenient. Does anyone have any idea what to try next? Thanks!

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), AppleTV 2, iPhone 5s, iPad Air

    Have you tried this:

Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.  Go to My Watch > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings

Then set up your Apple Watch as if you just took it out of the box for the first time.

If your symptoms happened to me, that is what I would try.

In all honesty, I've been thinking that that is exactly what I'll have to do. Right now I'm waiting for a call back from the Apple Care tech I spoke to on Monday; he'd referred my case to the engineers, so I'm going to wait a bit longer in case they have an easier solution. I suspect, though, that I will end up doing exactly what you say, and then I'll hope that the cards will be accepted again. Thanks for your reply, and I'll mark your question as the solution if it does end up being "the one".

Thanks.  Best of luck getting this solved - one way or another.  I'd be interested (and surprised) if the Apple engineers offer a different solution.

Today I set up my watch as new, and — of course — that's done the trick, just as you suggested and I suspected. Thanks for your contribution, sberman!

Oh I do enjoy it! I've been enjoying Apple gear since the late 1980's. LOL!
