Q: photos locking up, can't quit...

I'm running 10.10.4 on a 2014 MBP Retina. Sometimes when I click on the share button in Photos my computer will just beep at me, instead of showing me the options. When this happens, I notice almost all of the menu options are grayed out, including the option to quit. I end up force quitting and starting it back up and it will often do the same thing. It seems to happen the most when I'm uploading pictures to icloud photo library and icloud photo sharing. Not sure what the deal is...

Also, I'm noticing that icloud photo sharing seems to upload a separate copy of an image. If I share a photo and later decide to edit the original version in my library, it's not reflected on the shared version. That seems silly that a separate copy has to be uploaded to Apple's servers. Perhaps its more secure than allowing others access to some of the photos in your spot on the server? I have make any edits before I share photos, otherwise I have to remove them from a shared album and start over.

Install today's update to MacOS X 10.10.4. It will bring bug fixes for more stability in Photos. See if the problem persists after you install the update:

    Hi,

Ive checked the Mac Update and it says its downloaded, but I am still having TSWOD every time I try to view pictures that I "migrated" from iPhotos to Photos.

After I quit, the external HD stays connected, and I am forced to use "Force Quit".

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

Have you already repaired you Photos Library?

To repair the library make first a backup copy, but don't overwrite any backup you already have.  Then restart Photos with alt-command held down and select "Repair" from the panel that will appear. That may take a long time for a large library.

It seems to happen the most when I'm uploading pictures to icloud photo library and icloud photo sharing. Not sure what the deal is...

If repairing the library does not help, try to restart the cloudphotosd.

Try the fix in this post:  Re: Yosemite Photos iCloud photo sharing not working

    VERY interesting, thank you!!

I had the same problem after a Time Machine backup.

    I've found a solution :

    1. Quit Photos

    2. Remove the folder:

    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.cloudphotosd/Data/Library/Application Support/com.apple.cloudphotosd

    3. Restart

    4. Launch Photos

    … and everything works again!!

Your user library may still be hidden.

To reveal the hidden User Library:

    • Bring the Finder forward by clicking on the Desktop or the Finder icon in the Dock.
    • Select your user/home folder (with the house icon in the Finder sidebar)
    • With that Finder window as the front window, press the key combination ⌘J to bring up the View options.
    • In the View options panel enable ’Show Library Folder’. That will make your user library folder visible in your Home folder.
    • Open your Home folder, then the Library folder, then Containers.
    • Move the complete folder ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.cloudphotosd/Data/Library/Application Support/com.apple.cloudphotosd to your desktop. Move the entire folder, not just the contents.

Now restart the Mac and try again.  If all is well, delete the folder from the Desktop.
