landscape mode turn off side panel while texting

When I rotate the phone into the landscape orientation when texting, I can't get rid of the side pane that lists all texts; I rotate it so that I can get full screen, but the the side pane takes up half the screen eliminating the advantage of having a larger texting area. Can this side panel be turned off?
