What's the confusion? First you choose the format of the book - hardcover/ Softcover etc, - and the size. Once you've done that you look at the templates and choose one you like.

As someone trying to choose a theme, it'd be nice to know BEFORE selecting one what the specifics are. For instance, do any of them include photo caption? I shouldn't have to create a book with each theme in order to make that determination, but as far as I can tell, that's what I'm going to have to do.

You don't. Make one book with one Photo. Then change the theme to explore on it. Note the option button...

As for what you should or shouldn't have to do, tell Apple.

    I agree with Poiks ...

There are 18 different themes ....  What's the difference between each one (beyond the differences I can see without opening the theme)?  Surely Apple wouldn't require me to open each and every theme to see what's in the theme ... isn't there somewhere in the Help menu or on the Apple support pages that explains the differences?  Obviously, I could get a notebook out, open each theme, and write down all of the parameters and characteristics of the theme (because I couldn't possibly remember them all), and every time I wanted to do a project, I could pull out my notebook first.

If that sounds a bit tedious to you, then we agree.  A better way would be for this information to be somewhere on the Help system or online .... right?

If I've missed where this information is, I'd be very appreciative if someone could point me in the right direction.

    Thanks!

There are minor differences between he books, but the covers give you a very god sense of the looks. After that they all have pretty much the same options. So, pick a look you like. They all do full pages, split pages, etc etc etc. Everybody else seems to manage on that basis.

    Other than that

Really? Not me. I'm not a newbie, I've been using a Mac since 1984, and have made 18 books using iPhotos, but I'm a newbie to Photos.  (Yosemite, Photos Version 1.0.1 (215.65.0)

Evidently like Poiks and Mac Newbie I'm a guy who wants to know, ahead of time, what aa 85-page book will look like, and what options I do or don't have *before* I write captions and then lose them all when I want to see another theme's capabilities and shortcomings. iPhotos allowed this obviously necessary feature.

There must be SOME way to see what the page layouts are in Photos, before "creating a project."

Must there? What I do is create a book, add a couple of shots and then start experimenting with the theme.

Yes really! - Apple sells thousands (probably tens of thousands) of books a month to thousands of users who had figured it out

and why "must" there be something that you demand - that is totally illogical - you think of something and therefore it must exist????>

one user has put together a user tip for the overall attributes of different themes but no one I've seen has done a detailed page layout sample since Liz Castro do one for iPhoto and updated it to '09

Since what you want must exist then you find it and tell us about it - we will share it

I couldn't agree more. Let's cut out wasting my time and make the choices simple and easy, the Apple way of doing things and have it all easily available before I lay out my book.

Obviously not the Apple way of doing things...
