how to get and reset IP address on HP Jetdirect 300X from a Mac?

I am trying to figure out how to configure an HP Jetdirect 300X print server so that it can be used by both Macs and PCs on my network to print to an HP 5MP Postsript laser printer. (Yes this printer is slow but it still prints beautifully)

The server did configure Appletalk properly and it does print via Appletalk from my Macs, but I would like to configure its IP address for IP printing. The documentation says the IP address is supposed to default to 192.0.0.192 but all I get is 0.0.0.0 which is unusable. The configuration test page always says "TCP/IP STATUS: INITIALIZING BOOTP/DHCP IN PROGRESS" and it never gets assigned an IP address so that I can try to telnet to it and change its IP address to a static one. I don't know how to turn off this BOOTP/DHCP query.

Do I need to turn off Appletalk (on all the Macs) and then try again, or does this matter?

After I finally get a default address, I also need to know the proper steps and syntax to change it.

It appears that I need to update the server's firmware (it has H.06.00) as well, which apparently can only be done from a PC, so I need to know where to begin.

Macs Since 1984!, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I can't get this to work. I can't connect to the print server at all from OS9 over ethernet using Appletalk. It does not show up in the chooser, Laserjet Utility does not work, and Desktop Printer Utility does not show it.

The print server and printer are working fine from the OS 10.4 machines over both ethernet and Airport Express using Appletalk. I cannot connect to it in any way from a PC and it will not set a TCP/IP address. It just keeps trying to endlessly get one from DHCP which I am not using. The server firmware is not late enough to use ARP and PING, and I can't update the firmware without connecting it to a PC! I can't use telnet without a TCP/IP address to start off with.

Is there any way to turn off the BOOTP/DHCP?? The server is supposed to stop trying to get an address from BOOTP/DHCP after 2 minutes, but it is never stopping.

Here's what I'd try -
The old HP Laserjet Utility runs on Classic and uses
appletalk to communicate. It comes with most OS 9
Laserjet driver installers (like the 5M). I'd use
that to set the IP address of the Jetdirect to be in
your local subnet. Then you'll be able to use windows
to install the firmware.

Good luck.

Hey thanks, I finally did get the TCP/IP address configured by using OS9 (that is a story unto itself). It turned out that the Appletalk on the OS9 computer was trying to communicate over PhoneNet/Localtalk (which is not connected) rather than the Ethernet so once I got it set to Appletalk over Ethernet I was able to connect to the printer with the Laserjet Utility. The address that I set appears to be static so I've got my fingers crossed. I was able to telnet to it from PC and check its configuration and DHCP is now turned off. Now, hopefully, I will be able to update the firmware and then use ARP and PING on a modern computer if its address gets zeroed out in the future.

So, I've got my first step done. Now on to step 2.
