I had to install a new harddrive in my mid 2009 macbook. I also upgraded to 2 x 2gb crucial ram. I installed snow leopard when I installed my hard drive. I am trying to upgrade to mavericks and I am trying to install 10.9.1. It says I need to install 10.9 but I cannot find 10.9.

Apple no longer sells 10.9.5 Mavericks. You need to download Yosemite.
You're trying to install the entire OS from just a .1 update package. That will never work.
Be aware that to install Yosemite, Snow Leopard will have to be updated to 10.6.8:
