Why do properties change when downloading?

I am downloading movies and pictures from iCloud.com to my Mac. These movies and pictures are made with my iPhone, and include information like 'date and time taken' and gps coordinates. After downloading to my Mac, these pieces of information are missing or changed.

1) Date and time taken: this is changed to the time that I download the file to my Mac. This is absolutely not relevant....How can I keep the original information?

2) GPS coordinates: the original file keeps gps info. After downloading, this is missing.

To me it really is strange that information is altered when downloading. Is Apple trying to make me buy more iCloud storage? Or are they just annoying their customers? Please help me out!

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)
