Preview deletes comments

I marked up a PDF in Adobe reader mostly using "Add note to replace text". This resulted in strikethrough on the text and an associated note with the new text. Wanting to see if Preview would retain the markups I closed Adobe and opened the file in Preview. The strikethrough was there but the notes were missing. I closed Preview and reopened the document in Adobe Reader and the notes were gone! Three hours work disappeared! It seems the notes did not transfer to Preview and when I closed Preview it save the document without the notes and without asking if I wanted to save it. Where I used "Add note to text" the notes were retained. Is there any way to get my notes back?
